Citations to cases appear regularly throughout all of your readings in law school. Unless you feel absolutely compelled, you don't need to go and find the materials cited in your case books. If you were to look up every case, you would never finish your reading. But, in certain circumstances, e.g., when a point is ambiguous, case cites can be helpful. I think I looked up a cite once first year.
